A retail expert talks about his fears of more retail store closings if owners don't modernize their marketing efforts.

As more and more retail stores are shuttering their doors across the nation, small and local business experts are talking about what’s causing the movement that’s become known as the Retail Apocalypse. And while most experts attribute the mass of store closings to the surge in online shopping, one expert says it’s a little more complicated than that.

“I agree that retail giants like Amazon have pulled a lot of business from local mom and pop stores,” says a spokesman from FindUsLocal.com, a local business directory that uses cutting edge software called GEO technology to show visitors a custom home page build around their local area as soon as they log onto the site. “But when analyzing the data, I think the solution is fairly simple, and it’s important with the busy fall season right around the corner.”

He cites recent studies that show even though a lot of people shop online, the majority of them would prefer to shop in the local stores in their community. “I think the root of the problem is that many local business owners don’t know how to reach out to today’s internet savvy consumers,” he says. “And so consumers become frustrated trying to find local stores on the large search engines that cater to national chains, so they give up and make their purchase online because it’s easier.”

Local business directories offer consumers an easier way to find local businesses, he says, and those business owners who list their shops, restaurants, and service businesses on them have a better chance of surviving the current retail Armageddon.

“If you own a local business and don’t have an online presence, your chances of survival are slim,” he says. “Luckily, it’s an easy fix. Just log onto a local business directory and create your business listing. It’s really that simple.”

About FindUsLocal: FindUsLocal uses geolocation technology in visitor’s browsers to construct a home page focused on their city, town or community. Right there on the front page, they’ll find local weather, sports results for their favorite teams, and announcements of the top musical acts and events coming to their city. Smart business owners list their businesses on the site to be seen by those who are specifically looking for businesses in their local area.
