Some people claim that local business directories are no longer useful, but an expert in local marketing says that statement is absolutely false.

“I’ve heard that claim before,” says a spokesman from, a local business directory that automatically matches visitor’s locations with a customized home page that show them news and events from their area. “But as usual, the people who are saying it don’t understand the principles of today’s local marketing.”

He says that almost 100 percent of shoppers use local business directories to find local businesses in their area. “When you have almost 100 percent of the population using a tool, it’s difficult to understand why anyone would argue against it,” he says.

He goes on to say that unless local businesses have an online presence, they won’t be found by today’s consumers. “People look online when they want to find local businesses,” he says. “And those businesses who don’t have a website or make use of free local business listings aren’t going to be found. And if shoppers can’t find them, they won’t attract the new business they need to sustain their store.”

He says the best part of local business listings is that they’re free. “There is no longer any reason why local business owners can’t establish an online presence,” he says. “All it takes is about ten minutes to open the door to a whole new set of customers.”
