Healthcare experts are estimating at least a 10 percent rate hike for El Paso health insurance consumers in 2018.
The changing dynamics of the competitive health insurance marketplace has been cited for potential premium spikes projections as well as Congress not allocating money to stabilize individual coverage under the Affordable Care Act (ACA), commonly known as Obamacare. The proposed changes would have included reinsurance programs and funds to assist consumers with co-payments and deductibles. Health care experts have estimated that if stabilization efforts are implemented in forthcoming spending bills, premiums for health insurance in El Paso (and nationwide) for individuals who purchase insurance on their own could fall by 10 percent in 2019 and and 20 percent in later years.
“Providing assistance for individuals and families to subsidize healthcare costs is always a good thing. Hopefully, we’ll see some of those necessary proposals become available to recipients soon,” says Rick Thornton, an El Paso health insurance agent for Insurance4Dallas.
Cost-sharing reductions (CSRs) which assisted consumers enrolled in various subsidized plans pay for their co-payments and deductibles were eliminated in 2017. There has been a bipartisan effort in Congress to introduce various bills to re-introduce elements of the CSRs. Health insurance providers have noted that historically as more people sign up for coverage through ACA, individual market sizes increase leading to a greater number of options offered and lower pricing.
