Eco-Friendly Tote Bags Supplier Urges Folks to Shop Green for the Holidays

Green shopping bags are just one of the changes you can make for a friendly shopping routine, says local business owner. He offers tips to help celebrate a greener Christmas.

A local business owner and entrepreneur is urging residents to have a green Christmas this year, and he’s not talking about the weather. The businessman, whose company supplies reusable shopping bags and a number of other eco-friendly lifestyle products, notes that typical holiday shopping and gift-giving contribute to pollution in many ways, but it only takes a few lifestyle changes to make a big difference in Christmas’ environmental impact.

“Many people use reusable shopping bags for their grocery shopping now,” he offers as an example. “But they still let the clerk bag their convenience store purchases, and take home their department store purchases in disposable plastic bags. It’s time to think beyond grocery shopping when going green for the holidays.”

Substituting eco-friendly tote bags for plastic grocery bags is one of the easiest ways for families to start going green, he notes. If families keep a variety of reusable shopping totes on hand, it’s far easier to “do the green thing” and shop responsibly. There are also other easy ways to start shifting to a greener lifestyle, and the holidays are a great time to start making those changes.

“Start by buying gifts locally,” he suggests. “Many small businesses are invested in the green economy. They offer eco-friendly gift choices, often made locally or with locally sourced ingredients and components. Your local purchases reduce the carbon trail of all your gifts.”

That’s a message that resonates with many in the business community, as seen in the success of Small Business Saturday and Green Shopping Fairs throughout the county. This year’s Small Business Saturday was the most successful to date, according to the National Federation of Independent Business, with consumers spending more than $16 billion in local, independently owned businesses. That figure represents a 14% increase over 2014.

“And skip the expensive wrapping papers and “gift bag” packaging,” he adds. “Wrapping paper, ribbons and fancy gift bags just end up in the trash. If you must wrap, choose recycled tissue paper, which reduces the impact on the environment both pre- and post-consumer, or substitute an eco-friendly reusable shopping bag for a holiday gift bag or gift wrap. You’ll be giving a gift that keeps on giving, and encourages more people to join the responsible green shopping movement.”
