-- Ear problems are commonplace in this day and age, with more people increasing the use of earbuds (the listening kind, of course) if used on a frequent basis can become breeding ground for infection due to excess moisture that has built up around the earbuds from general usage which could lead to even further problems down the line.
Hearing loss is a common problem with the hearing that people report. There are also plenty of causes of hearing loss which can be broadly divided into conductive and sensorineural causes, sometimes though, both may be present. Conductive causes can be something as simple as managing ear wax build-up, or more complicated such as a perforated eardrum or cholesteatoma which may require surgery depending on the severity.
A sensorineural hearing loss, however, can occur for a multitude of different reasons ranging from the aftermath of a viral infection, noise damage, or just small growths compressing the hearing nerve, all o this can lead to hearing loss, balance problems, or tinnitus. An assessment that consists of a thorough examination and various hearing tests to point to the correct diagnosis.
One of the other common ear problems, a perforated eardrum is an eardrum that has developed a hole in it, usually due to an infection or trauma, or even other diseases such as cholesteatoma. By themselves, a perforated eardrum won’t cause any problems however they can sometimes leak fluid from the middle ear and be responsible for a degree of hearing loss and cause disruption for people who favor swimming, as water can irritate the middle ear lining. For these reasons, patients may want their eardrums to be repaired. A myringoplasty is an operation to close the eardrum. This is done using a small piece of fat from your earlobe if the hole is small, or using a piece of the lining of your temple muscle if it is larger.
