One of the more common health concerns is issues with thyroid nodules. While sometimes they go unnoticed, they often interfere with breathing and swallowing. They can also have a negative impact on appearance. In their lifetimes, an eye-opening 75% of people can develop thyroid nodules, which has created a great demand for having them removed. This has meant general surgery and then a reliance on thyroid medication for most. In exciting news, Newport Beach, California-based well-respected board-certified Endocrinologist and Internal Medicine specialist Dr. Sean Nikravan has announced he is now performing a non-surgical treatment for thyroid nodules – Thyroid Radiofrequency Ablation. This treatment has won praise from patients for its ability to successfully reduce thyroid nodules without the need for surgical treatment. The enthusiasm surrounding having this option available has been relatively high and rising.
“I am most excited about Thyroid Radiofrequency Ablation because it has given us the opportunity to take patients to a very different perspective,” commented Dr. Nikravan. “One of the very first benefits is that you don’t require general surgery. You don’t need to be intubated, you don’t need general anesthesia, there is no scar site, and you do not lose your thyroid gland, and last but not least, you do not need to take thyroid hormones to sustain life. It is a minimally invasive procedure that is done in the office and lasts less than an hour.”
According to Dr. Nikravan, Thyroid RFA is a minimally invasive procedure that is navigated with ultrasound, bringing a special electrode that is then used to transmit radio frequency waves into the thyroid nodule. The heat from this process causes the size of the nodule to shrink. The RFA technology is only used to treat thyroid nodules that are non-cancerous, which means completely removing them is not necessary.
Patients who are most appropriate for the Thyroid RFA treatment include those with large non-cancerous nodules that are causing a negative impact on a person’s voice and/or breathing; the treatment can have remarkable results for those whose nodules are visible and causing pain in the neck region; and RFA can also be valuable to treat benign toxic autonomous for those who are using conventional nuclear medicine, which can lead to permanent hypothyroidism.
For now, Thyroid RFA is only offered for those with benign tumors. It is expected in the near future that RFA will also become an option for those who have small cancerous thyroid tumors as well.
The results from Thyroid RFA treatments with Dr. Nikravan have been extremely positive. In 30 days of treatment, tumors have been reduced by up to 60% and have been shown to be up to 85% smaller within six months to one year after the procedure. Most of the tumor’s reduction in size can be seen in the first three months, with the rest of the change in the tumor’s size coming gradually. For a treatment where invasive surgery is not required, it can be seen how Thyroid RFA has such appeal.
Dr. Nikravan has trained at the world-renowned Endocrine University at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN, for thyroid ultrasound and guided biopsy. His experience is very deep in this area, having performed well over 50,000 ultrasound-guided biopsies in private practice since 2005. In addition to his private practice in Newport Beach, California, he is on staff at Hoag Memorial Hospital and well known and respected across the Orange County medical community. Dr. Nikravan has won numerous awards and positive recognition, including being ranked Physician of Excellence in Endocrinology and Internal Medicine for three years in a row by Orange County Medical Association.
Feedback for Dr. Nikravan continues to be extremely enthusiastic, pointing to both his skill and his warm treatment of patients.
Karen P. recently said in a five-star review, “I have seen Dr. Nikravan for five years, and he is professional and concise. Treating me for a considerable amount of time, I feel he has been very helpful, and I would not be as healthy now if I had not come to him.”
