Former professional basketball player Shawna Nicols disrupted the male-dominated DJ world over a decade ago as a new type of DJ movement developed. Hailing from Lake Michigan’s western shores, Shawna, a Milwaukee-native, can bring together a crowded room with her high-energy mixes and infectious personality. As one of the premier open format DJs in the Midwest, she has been invited to be one of just four DJs allowed in the NBA “bubble,” but her journey doesn’t start there.
Shawna is the official DJ for the Milwaukee Bucks, DJs for the NCAA, the College World Series, and the Women’s Final Four. She was the official DJ for the University of Wisconsin athletics and Marquette University. In 2019, she opened for Lizzo at Summerfest.
Because of her association with the Milwaukee Bucks, the NBA invited her to DJ in the COVID-19 “bubble.” This opportunity is rare for a DJ as only four professionals were picked out to be a part of it. Even more extraordinary is that she is the only female DJ. Shawna says, “Being part of the NBA Restart in Orlando is truly an honor and a privilege. Every morning I wake up, I am so grateful to feel safe, to be healthy, and realize this is so much bigger than a game of basketball.”
Shawna has been defying the odds for a long time over her diverse career; she is a motivational speaker, an entrepreneur, a children’s book author, and owns a clothing line called Dare To Be Clothing. Her presence can be felt on an international level as her #DareToBe movement has inspired people from all over the world. She empowers people to be their best selves and never stop reaching for their goals.
Shawna has inspired thousands over her illustrious career. Now she continues her journey into the NBA bubble.
