Blog post compares the differences and effects of the different standards of gold used in jewellery today.

-- A new blog post has revealed the link between the different gold standards and their effects on jewellery design and quality, and how the two prevailing systems of categorising gold can be combined.

Entitled “What’s the difference between 999, 916, 750, 24, 22, 18, K, ct, Karat, and Karet gold?”, the post reveals what all gold lovers know but refuse to acknowledge openly: that the gold that you are buying is not all gold.

When asked about her reason for exposing this uncomfortable truth, copywriter, reviewer and blogger Lui Natasha Amanda had this to say:

“Many inexperienced gold-buyers have this mistaken notion that when they buy gold, they are paying for 100% gold. The truth is, what you are paying for is an alloy, a mix of metals that includes gold.”

“They also believe that all gold jewellery is equal, which is definitely not true. My blog post will address that.”

Lui also elaborated that gold has a natural allure that is appealing to all mankind. Women buy it for its beauty, while men take to it because it is a statement of wealth and power. In addition, gold has been traditionally used as a hedge against inflation, an alternative currency to cash in times of uncertainty.

Other than explaining the difference between 750, 916 and 999 gold, the write-up by Lui also highlighted the inverse relationship between the quantity of gold and the intricacy of the piece.

“Elaborate designs require a stronger metal, and gold is actually very soft. To counteract this softness, goldsmiths need to mix gold with higher quantities of other metals to give the alloy strength. If not, the gems that you set – your diamonds and sapphires – might fall off with the first knock to the piece.”

Those not familiar with the industry practice might deem this as cheating, but this method was adopted as standard protocol to give strength to the design of the jewellery piece and to protect the settings.
