The book is a collection of short essays, editorials, and anecdotes geared toward fans of personal memoirs and non-fiction autobiographies. Perkins wrote the majority of the pieces over the last 30 to 40 years, and they cover a wide range of topics, from fatherhood and relationships to loss and grief.
on LIFE has been a labor of love, according to Perkins. He originally set out to write the book in response to numerous requests from friends and family for copies of his writing. However, as he progressed through the writing process, the project transformed into a meaningful opportunity for Perkins to impart his wisdom and experiences to his son.
“I promised my son that I would try to leave the paper trail that I wish I had had from my own father,” explained Perkins. “I have pieced together at least a short trail for him. Whether he finds it of any value, or even interest, will not be in my control.”
Several pieces in the book are inspired by Perkins’s time spent in the television and motion picture industry, where he worked for 30 years as a post-production contributor. His hobbies — writing, music, and digital marketing — also find their way into many of the pieces.

Its tone oscillates from page to page; some pieces are more upbeat and humorous while others are somber and self-reflective. Perkins is also not afraid to challenge popular opinions and conventional wisdom, often taking contrarian stances on hot-button issues.
