Daily Planet, a Chicago design and production studio, has teamed with Streetwise and 20 local artists to make hand-screened designer tshirts for the homeless of Chicago to sell. It’s all part of a campaign called Give A Shi*t. 100% of every dollar raised will benefit Streetwise vendors and Streetwise.
“We’ve been wanting to give back to the community as a company and this seemed like the perfect way to do it,” said Scott Marvel, President of Daily Planet.
So Daily Planet reached out to Julie Youngquist, the Chief Executive Officer of Streetwise. “This was a perfect fit for our mission. We don’t believe in hand outs but instead we encourage hand ups. Give A Shi*t is the Streetwise program, but with tshirts instead of magazines!”
According to Ron Linnemann, one of the tshirt designers, “The name of my design is “Symbols of Hope”. The idea behind it, is “By opening your heart, your mind and your eyes, you can really help someone through Streetwise. My inspiration came from deep-rooted celtic symbols, that closely represent the theme that Scott came up with for this year’s GiveAShi*t event. I wanted to interweave them to show strength as one object. My hope is that it’ll connect with a lot of people, and that it’ll become a great conversation starter to bring awareness to our cause.”
Designer of, “NICE”, Kara Hamilton said, “I made this design as a reminder to stay nice to others and ourselves. I think the struggles we face can make it harder and harder to keep our hearts open. This message is made out of a bunch of tiny roses to help us remember to keep coming from a place of love and kindness because it really does make a difference.”
The shirts will be sold by Streetwise vendors at a one-day-only pop-up shop at the historic Michigan Ave. Bridge Tower at the corner of Michigan Ave. and Wacker Drive on Thursday, December 7th from 10am-8pm.
In addition to the temporary “pop-up shop” in Chicago, those interested in helping the cause can also purchase the shirts online at http://GiveAShirt.net
Each shirt will be sold for $25 and 100% of every dollar raised will benefit Streetwise vendors and Streetwise.
“This is the 3rd year we’ve done this promotion and my hope is that the response will be even better than it was last year. To be able to use our talents to help someone in our community is the greatest gift of all,” Marvel said.
