-- VENTI Group Ltd ("VENTI") has launched a new Continuing Professional Development (CPD) course aimed at equipping residential architects with the essential knowledge and tools to navigate the implications of Ella's Law. The CPD, titled "Ella's Law: A Blueprint for Clean Air in the UK's Built Environment," focuses on the significant shift towards a rights-based framework for clean air and the new duties it places on the built environment sector. This new course empowers architects to design healthier, safer homes by proactively addressing indoor air quality from the earliest design stages.
The Clean Air (Human Rights) Bill, or Ella's Law, seeks to establish a legal right for all citizens to breathe clean air, encompassing both indoor and outdoor environments. The proposed legislation, inspired by the tragic death of Ella Adoo-Kissi-Debrah from severe asthma, aims to set legally binding air quality targets aligned with the latest World Health Organisation (WHO) guidelines. Poor indoor air quality, often exacerbated by dampness, mould, and inadequate ventilation, is a critical determinant of public health, as UK residents spend up to 90% of their time indoors. The Bill enables regulations to impose a duty on developers to monitor and report on indoor air quality in new builds and refurbishments for the first 12 months. For architects, this mandates a "Health-First Design" approach, moving beyond minimum compliance to proactively designing spaces where clean air is a foundational element.
"Architects will increasingly rely on properly designed mechanical ventilation systems that can filter incoming air and recover heat, balancing the tension between energy efficiency and healthy indoor air quality," states Bradley Pallister, Technical Manager at VENTI. "The new CPD course on Ella's Law empowers architects to become leaders in this space, instilling confidence in their ability to deliver projects that are not only compliant but also protect occupant well-being. At VENTI, we are proactive with our purpose to improve air quality for all homes, and this new CPD is a key part of that mission. Our aim is to become the go-to authority on domestic ventilation systems, providing easy-to-access knowledge and insights that leave our partners feeling enriched through meaningful and relevant advice."
The CPD course will provide guidance on navigating the evolving regulatory landscape, ensuring designs comply with Building Regulations, particularly Approved Document F (Ventilation). It highlights the importance of material selection, specifying products with low Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) emissions, and designing ventilation systems that provide adequate fresh air and effectively dilute pollutants while balancing energy efficiency objectives.
