A relatively rare condition, Congenital Muscular Torticollis, or CMT, can present many challenges to both infants and parents. Fortunately, with proper therapy, the condition can eventually improve; nevertheless, the experience can still be traumatic for everyone involved. Dr. Phillips-Williams, in collaboration with Community Health and Education Services, wrote the book to help parents navigate this difficult period of their lives.
“It’s completely natural to be alarmed and worried when you first discover your baby was born with CMT,” explained Phillips-Williams. “But there are many things you can do to support your child’s holistic development and alleviate the amount of stress and anxiety you feel, and that’s what our guide is designed to help you with.”
One of the primary purposes of the guide is to help parents address “pain points,” which are essentially feelings they’ll likely experience as certain obstacles to progress present themselves. For example, a general lack of information and understanding about CMT might lead parents to feel overwhelmed or confused, or, delays in diagnosis and intervention may cause them distress and worry. The book presents strategies for dealing with these feelings.
In addition, the book discusses the different classifications of CMT, medical intervention possibilities, and surgical options, and provides advice regarding practical aspects of therapy, such as orthotics, repositioning programs, and tailored care plans. To help infants overcome the condition sooner, the guide also offers some simple exercises parents can do at home.
“We wanted to provide parents with a practical guide, offering hands-on solutions to promote physical development,” said Phillips-Williams. “‘Parents' Guide to Congenital Muscular Torticollis’ is more than just a guide; it's a supportive companion, empowering parents with the knowledge and confidence needed to foster their child's optimal well-being.”
