Chiropractors Use Spinal Manipulation as Back Surgery Alternative

One recent cohort study has shown viable data indicating that spinal manipulation is a viable spinal surgery alternative. J Bone Joint Surg 2008;90B:Suppl.492., which was held in Great Britain, showed that patients receiving spinal manipulation treatments while waiting for their surgery date showed encouraging results of reducing the need for surgery. Alternative To Back Surgery

In this study, 102 patients were researched. Each patient was waiting to see a surgeon for the correction of herniated discs and sciatic leg pain after the use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS) after at least four weeks of pain. These patients were given adjustments five times a week while on the surgery waiting list. Of these 102 patients that were given adjustments, three of the treatments were failures and a few patients saw increased pain.

Many patients feel that they have no option but surgery, especially after trying rounds of medications for pain. One local practice, Sayville Chiropractic, realizes that spinal manipulation can bring relief and get patients’ back to their busy lives. Lower back pain and leg pain can be caused by herniated disks, a condition in which the hard cartilage in between the vertebra slides out of place. This condition can even cause a sprained ligament that bulges onto a nearby nerve.

Adjustments from chiropractors use bones as levers to affect the alignment of these vertebrae and the movement of the joints in the lumbar spine. Unequal loading of the soft tissues can be prevented by making mobility more symmetrical. Improving alignment allows better posture and distribution of loads. Sayville Chiropractic wants to lessen patients’ pain while helping them regain the quality of their life quickly by healing mechanical aspects and making mobility more symmetrical.
