Chiropractors have long provided treatment for a surprising range of medical ailments, including back and neck pain, sports injuries, shoulder pain, and more. People suffering with headaches have also found relief for years in chiropractic care. One recently released study shows that chiropractic care has demonstrated to be more effective in pain relief than medication in many cases.

When a patient seeks chiropractic care for headaches, he or she generally receives manipulation and adjustments to the cervical spine, or neck, and thoracic spine, or upper back region, and patients have reported that these treatments are highly effective in reducing headache frequency, duration, and intensity. A new study reports that spinal manipulation by a chiropractor yields better results than medication administration in many cases. In a recent issue of The Spine Journal, the Center for Outcomes Studies at Western States Chiropractic College reported that headaches caused by pain derived from the cervical spine can be effectively treated with spinal manipulation.

The newly released study compared two doses of therapy, using several protocols to measure and compare pain grade, the number of headaches in the last 4 weeks, and the amount of medication utilized. Data was collected every 4 weeks for a 24 week period, and patients were treated up to twice per week and separated into treatment sessions. Half of the group received either spinal manipulative therapy or a minimal light massage (LM) control group. The results of the study revealed the spinal manipulation group obtained better results than the control group at all time intervals. There was a small benefit in the group that received the greater number of treatments with the mean number of cervicogenic headaches reduced by 50% in both pain intensity and headache frequency.

For people who have suffered sports injuries, whiplash, and other cervical spine injuries, the findings prove that there are viable alternatives to medications and other pain management modalities.

According to Dr. Frank Gomez, who practices at Sayville Chiropractor, this information aligns with his clinical experiences over the past twenty nine years. “I have seen patients completely overcome chronic headaches with manipulation and adjustment. Having clinical data to back up my practical findings is a huge milestone not just for me, but for chiropractors everywhere,” said Dr. Gomez.
