An article by the Atlas Roofing Corporation identifies Gloeocapsa magma – a common species of algae – as the cause of roof discoloration in the form of black streaks and patches. Prolonged exposure to humidity and the rising temperatures of summer promote the growth and spread of these organisms. The black streaking is the result of the algal patch developing a UV-resistant layer acts as an origination point from where the infestation spreads from house to house.
Romero Roofing & Services now offers algae-resistant roof shingles from Atlas. The new shingles feature a special layer of Scotchgard protection. The triple-layer shingles are coated with a ceramic coating around a copper layer. In its sulfate form, copper is used as an algicide, inhibiting the growth and proliferation of algae.
Atlas Pinnacle Pristine roof shingles are available in 13 shades and come with a lifetime limited warranty against algal growth and manufacturing defects. The shingles are tested for durability and 15-year longevity in winds reach speeds of up to 130 mph and driving rain.
