The event serves as the cold-weather companion to the Lake Norman Half Marathon Forest Run & 5K, one of North Carolina's most popular running competitions. While previous editions took place at Lake Norman State Park, the 2024 race relocated to Mooresville, following hurricane damage to the original venue.
Runners can choose from three participation options with staggered start times to accommodate different skill levels. The half-marathon covers 13.1 miles and begins at 7:30 AM, while the 5K spans 3.1 miles starting at 7:45 AM. For those unable to attend in person, a virtual run option allows participants to complete any distance at their convenience.
Race packages include premium items that set this competition apart from standard regional events. The first 300 half-marathon registrants who sign up before November 3, 2024, receive hoodies, while 5K participants get short-sleeve tech t-shirts guaranteed in their size only if registered by November 30, 2024.
All finishers receive what organizers describe as North Carolina's best finisher medal, plus cups, beanies, and race decals.
Awards recognize excellence across multiple categories, honoring the top three men and women in overall standings. Age group categories also celebrate top performers, ensuring recognition spans different demographics and ability levels.
The race benefits the Human Health Project, which issues grants and donates food to local shelters. Organizers request that all athletes bring non-perishable food items to support this charitable mission.
Packet pickup runs from noon to 3:00 PM on Friday, December 19, 2025, at Charlotte Running Company in Mooresville. Race day registration opens at 6:30 AM for those who cannot attend Friday pickup.
Registration fees increase on October 1, November 1, December 1, and December 15, 2025, encouraging early sign-ups for cost savings. Epic Sports Marketing also offers a volunteer program where participants serve on race day in exchange for a complimentary entry.
