Robert Maniscalco is known for his exquisite portraits and fine art, which have become part of over 850 private and public collections throughout North America.

He built his painting method on the classical painting traditions of Rembrandt, Velazquez, Hals and Sargent. Through is work, he aims to capture the power and impact of light and shadow, while creating mood and achieving character in his subjects.

Each of his portraits is an adventure, and the aim is always to capture the unique character, traits, and personal strength of the sitter. Each painting is also deeply rooted in the human experience.

Robert Maniscalco was born in Detroit in 1959, and is the son of the renowned portrait artist Joseph Maniscalco. He apprenticed with his father in the early 1980s, then moved to New York, where he also worked as an actor and director.

Through his film work and his paintings, there is a through line of the basic need that humans share to communicate aesthetically about the human condition. A common theme in his work is man’s capacity to overcome great struggle.

Robert states: “My goal as a portrait painter, and an artist, is to create paintings that will stand the test of time as compelling works of art, alive with the personality of both artist and subject.”
