-- Bend, OR – August 2020 – Central Oregon Eyecare is welcoming Dr. Etosha Fegan, who has joined their team of eye doctors, seeing patients inDr. Fegan earned her Doctor of Optometry from the Pacific University College of Optometry in 2017 and began her career as an optometrist at Willow Creek Eye Care in Portland. While in medical school, she developed a passion for advanced eye care techniques, especially orthokeratology for myopia (nearsightedness) control.
Orthokeratology — also known as Ortho-K — uses specially designed rigid contact lenses to reshape the front surface of the eye, or cornea. They are worn overnight and taken out in the morning, affording patients stable vision correction over the course of the day. Ortho-K has been shown to slow the progression of myopia in children and temporarily correct nearsightedness in adults.
Dr. Fegan initially became interested in Ortho-K as a child, when her grandfather, an astrophysicist, became involved in some of the earliest Ortho-K studies. She hopes to provide more patients in the central Oregon area with access to this life-changing therapy.
“The ideal candidates for Ortho-K are nearsighted kids whose prescriptions are getting worse,” said Dr. Fegan, “and whose parents are nearsighted. Ortho-K in general is for moderate myopia, but it can also be effective for people under the age of 45 to reduce dependence on glasses.”
In addition to Ortho-K therapy and myopia control, Dr. Fegan is also passionate about treating patients with dry eye syndrome and finding solutions for hard-to-fit contact lens patients. Patients interested in learning more about Ortho-K are encouraged to schedule an appointment with Dr. Fegan at any of Central Oregon Eyecare’s five locations to find out if they are a candidate.
