The Village Jewellers is celebrating their 34th Anniversary as Canberra’s jeweller in Manuka. This anniversary commemorates the day in early December 1984, when one hard working migrant and his Australian wife opened their family operated jewellery store in Canberra, Australia.
Emigrating to Melbourne, Australia in 1956, Stelios met Margaret, married and together they moved to Canberra in 1960. Stelios worked as a jeweller/watchmaker for a number of large multi-franchise jewellers before the Village Jewellers got it’s start in 1984, when founder Stelios and Margaret Sofoulis opened the doors of their independent jewellers for business.
Son, Tony Sofoulis joined them in 1986 following completion of his Science and Gemmological studies. Taking over the business in 2000, Tony has been growing the business since. This is a huge milestone for the Canberra Jeweller, which has provided specialist jewellery design, jewellery repair and retail jewellery services to Canberra’s jewels, gems and watch aficionados since 1984.
One of the earliest challenges The Village Jewellers faced was finding a location with enough foot traffic to help gain traction and get a start in the community.
While every business of course faces challenges, some, like The Village Jewellers are fortunate enough to enjoy real successes, wins and victories too. Once such victory came when the family secured the location in Manuka, which was a key win. The retail precinct of Manuka today is renowned as Canberra’s centre for designer fashion, and it was no different 30 years ago. Manuka has always enjoyed a level of retail exclusivity, and it continues today.
Tony Sofoulis, Owner at The Village Jewellers was quoted when discussing another big win. “One of the high points of The Village Jewellers’ history so far was gaining our distributor status for a number of major European jewellery designers.”
The Village Jewellers’ Founder, Stelios says “We’re delighted to be celebrating our 34 Year Anniversary. The Village Jewellers currently consists of four full time and three part time employees and has big plans for the upcoming year. One of their core objectives is to leverage the modern laser technology that allows jewellery manufacture & repairs to be conducted on site. This allows Tony and the team to continue to be recognised as one of the region’s only jewellers capable of fast turn around manufacture & repair of jewellery.
