Though camping season still seems far out of reach in the midst of the winter storm currently battering the province, Saskatchewan residents still need to remember to perform spring maintenance on their RVs and trailers, as evidenced by the recent recall of Kidde fire extinguishers. The yearly fire extinguisher check is an area that is frequently overlooked by campers Saskatoon wide, however as was recently announced, many trailer owners may be unknowingly in possession of a faulty unit. The recall affects Kidde models with plastic handles and plastic push-buttons, units that are commonly found in RVs — Kidde Professional, Badger branded, and metal-handled units are not impacted, according to the recall website. Affected extinguishers are being recalled due to clogging and the need to apply excessive force in order to discharge the unit.
Local Saskatoon campers and trailer dealerships are doing their part to get the word out about the recall, seeing as most experienced campers have at least one fire extinguisher in their RV. One of Saskatoon’s oldest dealerships, Lardners Trailer Sales, posted a notice about the affected units on their website in order to help assist consumers. A spokesperson for the company noted that “safety while RV-ing is of the utmost concern to Lardners Trailer Sales. It is so important for consumers to stay on top of spring RV maintenance, despite the weather, and Lardners just wants to do its part in giving people the tools they need to stay safe this camping season”.
Being prepared can save lives, especially when it comes to camping. Savvy consumers should know that fire extinguishers do have an expiration date, as do smoke, propane leak, and carbon monoxide detectors.
