California Makes History with Statewide Plastic Bag Ban

California just passed a statewide ban on disposable plastic bag, and one spokesman says that's a step in the right direction.

Cities and towns all over the US are passing laws that ban the use of disposable plastic bags in an effort to curb the plastic pollution that is overtaking the environment. But California became the first state to pass a statewide ban.

The battle was fierce as plastic ban proponents fought the plastic bag industry to keep the law in effect that was signed in 2014 by Governor Jerry Brown. But the plastic industry tried to convince voters to defeat the ban, but they narrowly lost that effort.

“This is great news,” says a spokesman from MJH Innovations, a company that sells eco-friendly products, such as reusable shopping bags. “We were all hoping that consumers would see the importance of banning plastic bags, and it looks like they did. This was a serious victory for environmentally conscience folks who understand that if we don’t make some changes, our planet will pay the price.”

Most experts agree with the spokesman. They cite discouraging statistics such as the Texas sized garbage mass that floats in the ocean, and the fact that most Americans use at least 1,500 disposal plastic bags each and every year.

“I think people are waking up to the fact that plastic pollution is not only doing harm to the environment, but it’s also creating a mess that generations to come will have to deal with. I’m very encouraged by the measure California has taken, and I hope to see other states follow in its footsteps.”

While California is the first state to pass a statewide ban on disposable plastic bags, many cities across the nation are doing so and asking consumers to begin carrying their own reusable shopping bags. And experts say this especially important during the holidays as people tend to make more purchases this time of year.
