The Esalen Institute’s recently announced training program integrates two modalities: Integrative Gestalt™, which emphasizes self-awareness and emotional exploration, and Hologenic™ breathwork, a method that employs breath to access altered states of consciousness and transpersonal experience. Designed and led by Perry and Johanna Holloman, the program runs for 12 days and will guide participants toward healing inner trauma, restoring their natural healing abilities, and nurturing spiritual growth.

With decades of expertise in therapeutic practices, the Hollomans created their "Daily Dose" method, a 30-50 minute breath meditation taught and used in the upcoming training program. Other topics covered in the training include the physiological and psychological benefits of breathwork, techniques for healing trauma and regulating stress, and strategies for guiding others in breathwork sessions.
While breathwork has been used in alternative healing modalities for centuries, recent clinical studies have confirmed the technique has many health benefits. Controlled breathing techniques have been shown to lower cortisol levels, promote relaxation, lower blood pressure, and improve heart rate variability which is linked to better overall health. Studies involving breathwork have consistently reported reduced stress and anxiety, transforming stress into strength and enhanced cognitive function for participants.
The Immersion Training in Integrative Gestalt™ and Hologenic™ Breathwork is designed to accommodate both newcomers and seasoned practitioners. Along with the Hollomans' "Daily Dose" method, participants will engage in three 2.5 hour breath sessions during the training.
The longer 2.5 hour sessions are followed by supported Gestalt Inquiry which helps participants integrate their experiences from the breathwork. Artistic expression like writing, drawing and painting is encouraged after doing deep breathwork as a means of supporting self-discovery and reconnecting with ordinary consciousness.
Given the intimate nature of this immersive experience, space is limited, and early registration is encouraged.
One spokesperson for the program said, "Integrative Gestalt is a powerful tool supporting self-inquiry helping us to understand and metabolize our experiences as we journey together into realms of altered consciousness through breath."
