-- Prostaid Calgary has announced that its November 2025 monthly meeting will feature Dr. Fedir Razumenko, historian of medicine and science, as guest speaker. The event, titled “A History of Cancer Clinical Trials in Canada: How Carcinoma of the Prostate Jostled for Trialists’ Attention,” will take place on Wednesday, November 19th, with in-person and virtual attendance options available.
Further details are available at https://prostaid.org/meetings
Dr. Razumenko has been a researcher at the Cumming School of Medicine, University of Calgary, since 2019. His doctoral thesis, “Clinical Trials, Cancer, and the Emergence of Human Research Ethics in Canada, 1921-1980,” earned the University of Saskatchewan Doctoral Dissertation Award in the Fine Arts & Humanities. His ongoing research examines how Canadian cancer clinical trials evolved from a narrow biomedical model into a patient-centered framework that integrates ethics, compassion, and innovation.
Clinical trials remain a cornerstone of progress in prostate cancer research. According to the National Cancer Institute, more than 70 percent of new cancer treatments approved since 2010 have emerged from clinical trials that directly involved prostate cancer patients. These studies have advanced understanding of disease mechanisms, improved treatment precision, and extended survival rates for those living with prostate cancer.
Prostaid Calgary’s upcoming discussion with Dr. Razumenko offers a unique opportunity to explore how Canada’s medical community shaped modern cancer research and the ethical considerations that continue to influence it. His presentation will provide historical perspective on how trial methodologies have evolved alongside societal attitudes toward patient safety and informed consent, highlighting the crucial role of research volunteers in shaping life-saving therapies.
Prostaid Calgary, founded to support men and families affected by prostate cancer, continues its long-standing tradition of hosting informative, accessible monthly meetings. The organization provides open forums for education, discussion, and mutual support, offering three group formats: the General Meeting, the Warriors group for men navigating prostate cancer, and the Wives & Caregivers group for partners and supporters. All meetings are free of charge and welcome both newcomers and returning participants.
The session on Wednesday, November 19th, 2025 at 7:30 p.m. at the CKE Community Centre, 1015 73 Avenue SW, Calgary, will be recorded and archived for later viewing through the Prostaid Calgary website. As always, attendees can expect an evening of education, community, and informed discussion about prostate cancer awareness, care, and advocacy.
