Originating in the late 1800s among Black Americans, blues and gospel music emerged as candid expressions of life under oppression during the Jim Crow era. These authentic musical styles would go on to shape the foundation of jazz, R&B, rock ‘n’ roll, soul, hip-hop, and pop music.
Today, few living artists remain who directly experienced the Jim Crow sharecropper life and whose personal journeys embody the origins of the blues. Their experiences, resilience, and creativity serve as vivid reminders of the genre's profound impact on American culture.
“Blues artists used their life experiences to craft music that spoke honestly and powerfully to the human condition,” said Jamie Anthony, host of Blues Disciples Podcasts. “From homemade instruments to self-taught genius, these musicians forged a legacy of authenticity, perseverance, and emotional depth that continues to resonate across generations.”
At Blues Disciples visitors will find a rich library of over 250 original podcasts dedicated to exploring the lives and works of influential blues and gospel artists. These expertly-researched shows feature in-depth storytelling, artist interviews, and discussions with leading musicologists, ethnomusicologists, producers, and discoverers who have contributed to documenting and preserving the history of blues music.
Highlights of the new website include:
- Exclusive Interviews with legendary and contemporary blues artists
