Last week, BigCommerce, a leading SaaS (software as a service) ecommerce platform, based in Austin, Texas, released their Global Consumer Report: Current and Future Shopping Trends. Conducted in March, 2022, it’s a survey of over 4,000 respondents across the United States, United Kingdom, Italy, France and Australia, intended to provide businesses with insights into current and emerging consumer shopping trends.

Perhaps their key finding was that over half (55 percent) of respondents reported that they shop online at least once a week. With respect to the type of products they buy online, the survey found that 80 percent purchase fashion and apparel products, compared to 56 percent purchasing electronics and 55 percent making purchases of entertainment or media products.

The survey explored variables influencing shoppers’ motivations. Free Shipping was the offer consumers reported preferring over all others. Notably, BigCommerce reported increasing interest in delayed payment options, such as Buy Now Pay Later (BNPL). Sixteen percent reported they had used a BNPL option because it helped them fit purchases into their spending budgets. Among BNPL purchasers, 49 percent indicated the option would make it easier for them to complete the purchase, and 34 percent said they were more likely to complete the purchase.

Another takeaway from the survey was that while 37 percent of respondents were willing to share personal data, depending on what information was requested, 28 percent were unwilling to share personal data, regardless.

In a company press release, BigCommerce’s Chief Marketing Officer, Lisa Eggerton, summarized, “These findings show technological advances are reshaping the shopper’s journey and providing new and better ways for brands to engage with their customers. The future of commerce is here, and brands have a vibrant opportunity for remarkable growth.”
