The purpose of the open house charity event is to bring attention to the alarming trends for Seattle homeless youth. The King County Committee to End Homelessness estimates that between 5,000 and 10,000 youth and young adults experience homelessness each year in King County. It is estimated that over 1,000 youth and young adults are homeless on any given night in King County.
– Family crisis is the most prevalent reason youth and young adults identify for becoming homeless.
– Contrary to popular stereotypes, approximately 50% of homeless youth are “local kids” who are from the immediately surrounding geographic area. The rest flow from over 20 states toward the Pacific Northwest.
Participating in this effort is The Bailey Gatzert Elementary school who is already widely known for their community efforts. Keith Irvine is the family support professional who gathers food for the families, household items, and helps to get them into housing and even pays some of their bills in desperate situations to keep the children in school. The Bailey Gatzert Elementary school is recognized for the education of children and relies on the connections and contributions of many such as partnerships with families, other education organizations and the greater community.
Many of these outreach programs are focused on enhancing the academic abilities, self-confidence and life prospects of struggling learners and the under served communities.
Out Reach Programs include
– The Seattle University Youth
– America SCORES Seattle
– Seattle Music Partners
– Invest in Youth
