What is Suboxone®?
Suboxone® medication is an FDA approved treatment for opioid addiction. This prescription medication is in the form of a film, which patients dissolve under their tongue. Suboxone has two main ingredients: buprenorphine and naloxone. Naloxone is an antagonist or opioid blocker, while buprenorphine works as a partial agonist. This means that buprenorphine activates opioid receptors in the brain, but to a lesser degree than other full agonists (such as morphine or heroin). Because buprenorphine is a partial agonist, it is limited in its effects, but it has an advantage in its binding ability. Buprenorphine’s binding causes other opioids to transfer away from the receptors and guards the receptors, so no other opioids can attach. This ability is essential, since Suboxone treatment works to curb cravings and eliminate symptoms of opiate withdrawal. With Suboxone, patients can think more clearly and function normally. Dr. Mebane and his highly trained staff will help determine each patient’s individual course of treatment.
