Derm.ca (403-457-1900), a medical and cosmetic dermatology clinic, is now offering platelet-rich plasma therapy for acne scars to residents of Airdrie and the Calgary Metropolitan Region.

The platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy, now available to residents of Airdrie, is aimed at those with acne scars that do not respond to traditional treatments such as topical creams and over-the-counter acne treatments. The treatment can effectively reduce the appearance of atrophic scars by stimulating collagen production which promotes skin rejuvenation.

Platelets are a rich source of growth factors and signaling proteins that stimulate collagen production, helping to repair and regenerate skin tissue. During a PRP procedure, a small vial of blood is drawn from the patient and centrifuged to separate the platelets, from which the collagen-promoting growth factors are extracted. These are then delicately placed into acne scars to elevate the scar tissue, helping to smooth the skin’s surface.

A study published by the Clinical Dermatology Review journal supports the efficacy of PRP therapy in treating acne scars, noting that the majority of patients recorded reductions in the severity of acne scars. Moreover, the study highlights the safety of the treatment, with patients reporting minimal side effects.

Derm.ca explains that the best results from PRP therapy are achieved when it is combined with other treatments such as fractional laser and subcision. Additionally, clients are advised to exercise patience as collagen growth from PRP is not typically detectable for about six weeks. After this period, the Derm.ca team will assess the results and determine whether further PRP therapy is necessary.

Patients with soft, indented, and atrophic acne scars may be good candidates for PRP acne scar therapy. However, Derm.ca recommends scheduling a complimentary consultation for PRP treatment to determine if the patient is an appropriate candidate for the procedure. During this consultation, their team of experts will assess the individual's specific case and recommend the most suitable treatment options for their acne scars.
