Advancements in Dental Veneer Technology Make Tooth Restoration More Effective

Veneers have been around since the 1920s, so their creation is not exactly modern. This method of tooth restoration, however, is continually improving when it comes to function and the ability to blend in with natural teeth

Since their inception, dental porcelain veneers have come a long way in terms of convenience and realism, particularly within the past decade. Veneers have been around since the 1920s, so their creation is not exactly modern. This method of tooth restoration, however, is continually improving when it comes to function and the ability to blend in with natural teeth. Today’s veneers are worlds apart from the product that was available as little as a decade ago.

Veneers can improve the appearance of a patient’s teeth by altering their shape, size, color, and length without requiring invasive procedures. Rather than being a whole tooth preparation, porcelain veneers are thin shells that cover chipped, broken, discolored or worn teeth in a way that closely resembles natural teeth. Dental technology has succeeded in reducing the artificial appearance of veneers within the last ten years. As a result, the product looks more natural than ever before and has progressed significantly from the “chicklet teeth” aesthetic that was common with early veneers.

Patients can choose from several different material types, including:

• pressed ceramic when strength is a concern

• stacked ceramic which allows a greater degree of customization

• leucite reinforced ceramic, which is a thin, strong, monochromatic ceramic that allows better blending than past options. This option also requires less reshaping of the natural tooth than pressed ceramic.

• lithium disilicate, which is the newest type of material available. Its strong structure makes it ideal for any areas of the mouth.

In addition to the variety of materials available to better fit a patient’s needs, there are also alternatives that require no preparation in contrast with the traditional veneer installment method. Patients who receive no-preparation veneers do not have to have enamel shaved from existing teeth, or have their natural teeth reshaped at all in order to have the veneer fit. These no-preparation veneers fit directly over existing teeth. Today’s veneers are meticulously designed by skilled dental technicians to closely mimic the scale, shape, and color of natural teeth so that it’s nearly impossible to differentiate them from a natural smile.
