While in the midst of trying to sell off its core internet business to Verizon, Yahoo! confirmed this week that the company experienced a major data breach in 2014, exposing and compromising the accounts of at least 500 million Yahoo! Accounts, making it one of the largest data breaches of all time.
Yahoo! explained that while “personal information such as names, email addresses, telephone numbers, dates of birth, hashed passwords (the vast majority with bcrypt) and, in some cases, encrypted or unencrypted security questions and answers” may have been compromised, they believe that financial data like credit card or bank account information was not part of the breach.
The breach first came to light after a hacker named “Peace” was reportedly selling data to 200 million Yahoo! user accounts in late August 2016.
Victims of this Yahoo issue can now turn to Abine for help. Abine is the creator of Blur – the only password manager and tokenized digital wallet that gives consumers simply better passwords, payments and privacy.
